Investigating Women in Music Videos: Choose a music video that sparked some sort of controversy in the media. The primary artist should be a woman. This assignment will consist of a song/video analysis; an overview of the controversy, addressing the two opposing sides of the debate; and your personal reactions to the video and controversy.

Your selected video must, in some way, relate to gender—through lyrics, visual representation of women, the way a female artist presents herself or is discussed in the media etc. If the connection to gender in your video is subtle rather than obvious, make it very clear in your paper.

1) Choose a controversial music video (from 1980 to today)
2) Conduct a song/music video analysis. What’s the genre? What are the lyrics about? What role does the woman assume within the song’s narrative? In the video, what role does she play? Is she the central focus? Decoration? Object? What does she look like, what is she wearing? What happens in the video (not a play-by-play; choose the threads that are pertinent to your argument)? How do the lyrics/video relate to our class discussions about gender roles and social expectations etc.?
3) Locate sources (newspapers, magazines, blogs, YouTube comments, reviews, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) that address the controversy sparked by the music video. Identify the debate. You will need to present at least two different perspectives (e.g., in support of the video, opposed to the video) objectively. What do people say is controversial about the video? Why are they opposed to the video’s content? Or why do they support it? You must consulte at least 10 different sources.
4) What do you think about what you heard and watched in the video? The different opinions expressed by the media and the public? Tell me what you think and why. This part of the paper MUST contain a thesis. (You can be subjective in this section, and you may use “I.”)

2. Prepare a one to two page, double spaced, typewritten or word processed response to each case. For each case, ensure that your response or analysis addresses all aspects of the case problem.

Case 1

Graham, a 22 year old university student, decided to go go cart racing with a few of his friends. The local track, called Speed Demons, provided rentals of high powered go carts capable of speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. Speed Demons also had a restaurant and lounge.

Before renting a go cart, Graham drank four beers with his friends over lunch. When he paid his rental fee, Graham was presented with a “waiver of liability” form which he was told by the attendant to read and sign. Graham, who was swaying somewhat at the rental counter, did not read the form but signed his name. After his fourth erratic lap around the track, he lost control of the go cart and suffered a serious neck injury.

To make matters worse, when his friends rushed over to assist him, they didn’t realize he had injured his spinal cord and pulled him roughly out of the go cart. As a result, Graham’s spinal cord was damaged and he has lost the use of his legs. Medical experts claim that if proper precautions had been taken by his rescuers, he would have preserved the use of his legs and his injuries would have been relatively minor.

Advise Graham of his rights and determine the probable outcome if Graham should bring legal actions against Speed Demons and the friends who removed him from the go cart.

Case 2

Kirk went to “Togs to Go” to return a shirt for which he did not have a receipt. While attempting to convince the clerk to accept the return, he became quite agitated. When he began to raise his voice, the clerk called security. Mr. Brander, the store’s new security guard, arrived and told Kirk to leave the store. Kirk began to walk toward the door without protest, but Mr. Brander grabbed Kirk’s upper arm and insisted on escorting him out. On their way to the door, Mr. Brander said loudly, and within earshot of other customers, “You probably stole the shirt, and you’re lucky I’m not going to charge you.”

When they reached the door, Kirk pushed Mr. Brander away, presumably wanting to leave the store unassisted. Mr. Brander’s reaction was swift and violent. He put Kirk into a headlock and punched him in the kidney area. He then escorted Kirk to a room at the back of the store where Mr. Brander refused to let him use the phone. Four hours later, Mr. Brander finally called the police. Kirk was eventually released.

The store manager phoned Kirk to apologize for the actions of his overzealous security guard, but Kirk feels humiliated and wants to take legal action.

Explain Kirk’s options and the legal arguments available to both sides. What is the likely outcome?

‘Modernising Medical Careers’ (MMC) is an online programme for postgraduate medical training introduced in the UK from 2005 onwards. IT was devised and implemented by a think tank at the central policy offices of the National Health Service (NHS). For many years there have been concerns about the UK medical workforce, in particular the postgraduate medical training system. The most prominent of these centred on the poor training and indifferent career prospects experienced by some doctors at Senior House Officer (SHO) level and by many of those in Staff Grade and Associate Specialist (SAS) posts (online at:http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200708/cmselect/cmhealth/25/25i.pdf).

Therefore, the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) programme of work was established in 2003 to address these difficulties. In this line, MMC was intended to ‘improve patient care by improving medical education with a transparent and efficient career path for doctors’.

More specifically, ‘Modernising Medical Careers’ is an online lob application system for junior doctors. Rather than writing to hospitals for their first job appointment, junior doctors fill in a website based questionnaire and application form. Also, completion of the questionnaire and application form gives a point score; and from this decisions are made anonymously by a centrally based HR and jobs offers system.

The system, however, has been dogged by criticism within and outside the medical profession. As it quickly became apparent that the database itself was not secure, this has led to controversy and allegations made by students that their applications had been tampered with or altered. There was no guarantee either of the integrity of the form completion process and in many cases, forms that had been fully filled in were incomplete when they were downloaded by prospective employers. Also, the application process has had technical problems and was criticised over the weighting and marking of the applications, with one London training school calling it “unfair and ineffective” in resigning from the process.

Also, the House of Commons Health Select Committee published a report into the Government’s handling of the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) reforms on 8 May 2008. The report was highly critical of the way in which the reforms were managed, highlighting failings in leadership, governance and policy development. The inquiry exposed serious problems with the management of MMC reforms, and particularly the introduction of the Medical Training application Service (MTAS). The Committee criticised the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for a lack of leadership and the medical profession for the lack of a coherent voice. MPs also found co-ordination between the Department of Health (DH) and the Home Office ‘inadequate’ in handling attempts to restrict medical migration.

To the worst, as it was perceived sufficiently poorly within the medical profession, its implementation was ultimately boycotted by senior doctors around the UK.
